ESI’s Refrigeration Journeyman ensures that all safety programs, policies, and procedures are being adhered to. Plans, organizes, and manages the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems to operate efficiently and safely. Inspect work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and adherence to construction schedules. Oversees construction crews and will help with construction.

Responsibilities 

  • Assist team in installation of new refrigeration equipment and retrofitting existing. 

  • Support team by any means necessary while acquiring knowledge of the trade. 

  • Assist in maintaining/repairing refrigeration equipment.  

  • Assist in the maintenance of tools and equipment.  

  • Always maintain a clean work site.  

  • Comply with all Federal and State OSHA Standards, as well ESI’s Safety Program. 

  • Work flexible hours, including but not limited to weekends, evenings, and on-call rotations.  

  • Assist with other ESI self-perform scopes outside of refrigeration.  

  • Perform installation of PVC, PEX, and brazing of copper pipe.  

  • Physically move equipment with the assistance of tools and equipment.  

  • Perform tasks as directed by Foreman, Superintendent and or Construction Manager.  

  • Effectively install equipment and materials pertaining to refrigeration.  

  • Install, repair, test and diagnose refrigeration equipment.  

  • Follows plans, specifications, and installation manuals.  

  • Perform refrigeration line pressure testing. 

  • Follow refrigeration safety protocols and procedures.  

  • Lead a team of refrigeration technicians, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing guidance to ensure high-quality work and efficient operations.  

  • Plan and schedule daily tasks, maintenance activities, and repair work for the refrigeration team.  

  • Oversee the installation, repair, and maintenance of various refrigeration systems, including commercial and industrial refrigeration units, cold storage facilities, and HVAC-R systems.  

  • Collaborate with the engineering and maintenance departments to develop preventive maintenance schedules and strategies to optimize system performance and reduce downtime.  

  • Conduct regular inspections of refrigeration equipment, identifying and addressing potential issues to prevent system failures and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.  

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose complex refrigeration system problems, using advanced technical knowledge to develop effective solutions.  

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment maintenance schedules, and inventory of spare parts and supplies.  

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations in all refrigeration-related activities.  

  • Provide technical training and mentorship to refrigeration technicians, fostering a culture of continuous learning and skill development.  

  • Monitor energy consumption and implement energy-efficient practices to minimize operational costs.  

  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure necessary equipment, parts, and supplies for refrigeration projects.  

  • Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing proper safety procedures and protocols.  

  • Prepare and submit regular reports on the status of refrigeration projects, maintenance activities, and team performance to upper management. 

 

Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent  

  • EPA 608 Type 3 Refrigeration License  

  • Proven experience (4+ years) as a Refrigeration Technician or similar role, Journeyman License preferred.  

  • OSHA 30  

  • In-depth knowledge of refrigeration systems, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.  

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of technicians.  

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, with the capacity to make informed decisions under pressure.  

  • Solid understanding of safety protocols and regulations related to refrigeration systems.  

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective interaction with team members, vendors, and management.  

  • Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other relevant software applications.  

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.  

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations.  

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.  

  • Effective and professional communication and interaction with supervisors, employees, clients, and others, whether individually or in a team environment, are vital aspects of this position.  

  • Compliance with all safety protocols and the ability to follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment guidelines, and company policies, are vital to performing work safely and effectively. 

 

Working Conditions 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of what a Refrigeration Foreman 1 will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. 

  • Fast-paced working environment.  

  • Working environment may be busy and noisy.  

  • This position requires outdoor work, with exposure to various weather conditions. 

  • The role will frequently require working at heights, as well as in precarious places.  

  • This role will require working near fumes and airborne particles, as well as handling toxic and or caustic chemicals.  

  • Work environments will create excessive noise levels and require Technician’s to work in close proximity to live electrical circuits. 

 

Physical Demands 

  • The role will require extended work hours on construction sites, necessitating physical stamina to safely navigate the premises for up to or more than 8 hours per day.  

  • The ability to lift and or move materials and tools is essential, with a maximum lifting weight of 60lbs being required. 

 

Travel Requirements 

  • Will be required to work on project sites both within and outside of the Boise metropolitan area, and or in other states.  

  • This position may require frequent travel by motor vehicle, and/or airplane.  

  • The position may offer the possibility of a company-provided vehicle contingent upon meeting company policies and standards, and as deemed necessary.  

  • This position requires the employee to reliably travel utilizing their personal vehicle.
