The Senior Learning & Development Specialist is an experienced individual contributor responsible for creating clear, practical training resources that support ESI’s field and office operations.
As the company’s learning design expert, this role collaborates closely with the ESI Academy Leader, Technical Trainers, operational subject-matter experts, and members of the Organizational Development team to translate real-world construction knowledge into structured training and learning tools that can be delivered consistently, repeated, and applied on the job. The role works independently, moves quickly, and focuses on developing curriculum that reflects how work is actually performed in a construction environment.
This position does not have direct reports and is intentionally hands-on. The Senior Learning & Development Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining learning materials, tools, and standards that enhance training quality and consistency, while enabling Technical Trainers and OrgDev partners to support performance, capability, and workforce development across the organization. This role is based at our headquarters in Meridian, Idaho.

Responsibilities
- Serve as ESI’s primary learning design and curriculum development expert.
- Build and maintain training curriculum and tools supporting craft, technical, safety, and operational needs.
- Partner with Technical Trainers and subject-matter experts to convert real construction work into clear training materials.
- Collaborate with Organizational Development partners, including the OrgDev Program Managers, to align training with workforce initiatives.
- Apply adult learning principles to ensure training is practical, relevant, and field-ready.
- Create instructor-led materials, job aids, and performance support tools that enable consistent delivery.
- Establish and maintain templates and standards that improve training quality across the ESI Academy.
- Update existing content to ensure accuracy and alignment with ESI processes, standards, and culture.
- Support training rollout through pilot testing, feedback, and continuous improvement.
- Use available technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve development speed and quality while maintaining accuracy and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning & Development, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or learning & development roles.
- Experience in construction, the trades, manufacturing, utilities, energy, safety, or other operational environments is highly preferred.
- Proven ability to work independently as a senior individual contributor.
- Strong understanding of adult learning and instructional design practices applied in real-world settings.
- Track record of producing clear, accurate, and usable learning materials efficiently.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Clear communicator, able to collaborate across field, office, and leadership teams.
- Comfortable using AI-based tools to support research and content development with sound judgment in safety-sensitive environments.
